WASHINGTON (Feb. 20, 2025) — A recent Gallup poll found that 9.3% of U.S. adults identify as LGBTQIA+, marking a significant increase from last year’s 7.6%. The data also represents a 3.5 percentage point increase since Gallup’s initial 2012 report.
The findings indicate that identification is rising as younger generations enter adulthood. More than one in five Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQIA+.
Women lead the trend, with 10% identifying as LGBTQIA+ compared to 6% of men. Political affiliation also influences willingness to identify, with 21% of liberals and 14% of Democrats reporting LGBTQIA+ identification.
A substantial portion of this increase comes from individuals identifying as bisexual.
Why We March
Advocates say they want an environment where identifying as LGBTQIA+ is seen as normal, and where safe spaces exist for people to come out and find acceptance.
GLAAD’s Alert Desk currently reports 2,242 anti-LGBTQ+ incidents, including protests, vandalism and bomb threats against healthcare providers who serve transgender patients.
